Step 8: Gather All Documents and Apply for the State License

Congratulation! You’re at the finish line! The very last step is to apply for what you have been working for months or probably years… your license!

This step can be divided into smaller steps:
1. Gather your documents (e.g., exam certification, letters of recommendation)
2. Complete the initial license application
3. Pay a fee for each state you are wishing to hold a license in.

Note: Each state has a different process and may require specific or additional documents, all will require that NBCOT confirms you passing the exam.
You can request NBCOT verification from here.

Examples of additional state requirements may include performing a criminal background check, passing a state law and regulations exam, or sending an official transcript of your OT school program.
Some states require fingerprinting and others require references and verification of previous/ current OT licenses. Also, some states allow temporary licenses while others do not.
To find out more about temporary licensing in each state, click here.

You can start this process earlier so that all required documents are in place and the only missing link is the NBCOT exam. Once you pass it, everything will be complete, and you can request a confirmation of the exam score sent directly to the state association using the verification link above.

How can I know what documents are required from me?

Good question! You will need to contact your state occupational therapy licensing department and ask what documentation is required to be submitted with the application!

Please refer to the NBCOT® Occupational Therapy Regulatory Body Contact List by State to link to your state’s OT website address and contact information.

Note: Try to submit all the required documents from you at the same time! Your license will not be issued if a document is missing. Know that the licensing process can take weeks or months.
