Step 1: Evaluate Your Credentials!
Working in the United States can be an overwhelming journey that includes several challenges and steps. You will need to submit multiple documents to the OTED, these include: a copy of your transcript, a copy of your degree/diploma, and a description of the courses you took. Make sure to save a copy of these documents because you will need them later!
However, If you want to obtain a higher education, first thing you need to do is evaluate your overseas academic certification to see if it is equivalent to the U.S. education standards.
The United States has a comprehensive list of standards for occupational therapy education and the credentials’ evaluation is generally based on these standards. Click here to learn more.
This step will help you:
1. Showcase your accomplishments in a verified report that is respected by academic institutions and licensing boards.
2. Apply for graduate programs
3. Prepare for the OTED process (will be discussed later in the next steps).
Learn more information about the certification eligibility at the NBCOT® website.
How can I evaluate my certification?
There are different organizations that provide this service, examples include but not limited to:
1. World Education Services (WES)
4. Foreign Credential Evaluations (FCE)
The cost of the evaluations for each organization is different. Check out the websites to understand the application process for each organization. Some organizations require your overseas school to send your transcript to them.
Note: If you are applying for a graduate school, the school may recommend a specific organization to evaluate your credentials.
